Heat pump wiring, aux heat and the C-wire
Three things decide whether a thermostat runs a heat pump correctly: the reversing valve setting, the aux heat wiring and a steady power supply.
The reversing valve (O/B). A heat pump uses one wire to switch between heating and cooling. Most brands energize it for cooling, and a few energize it for heating. If the thermostat is set the wrong way, the system heats when you want cooling and cools when you want heat.
Aux heat. Your backup heat, usually electric heat strips or a furnace, needs its own wire and the right settings. Set up wrong, aux heat either never comes on during the coldest nights or runs far more than it should and drives up your electric bill. Dual fuel systems also need the thermostat told when to switch from the heat pump to the furnace.
The C-wire. Most smart thermostats need a common wire for steady power. Without one, some models borrow power through other wires, which on some systems causes restarts or equipment that cycles on its own.
Why DIY installs go wrong on heat pumps
DIY installs go wrong most often on heat pumps, and the cause is usually setup, not a bad thermostat.
- The old labels don't match. Wire colors aren't a standard, and older thermostats were sometimes wired in ways the new one doesn't expect.
- The O/B setting is backward. The house gets colder in heat mode, and it looks like the heat pump is broken.
- Aux heat isn't configured. The house can't keep up on the coldest nights, or the electric bill jumps.
- No C-wire. The thermostat works for a few days, then starts rebooting or losing Wi-Fi.
- The system type is wrong in the settings. A heat pump set up as a furnace and AC will never run right.

Do I need a C-wire for a smart thermostat?
Most smart thermostats need one for steady power. Some models can run without it by borrowing power through other wires, but on some systems that causes restarts, Wi-Fi drops or equipment cycling on its own. If your wall has an unused wire, we can often connect it. If not, we'll add a wire or use the right adapter.
Will a smart thermostat work with my heat pump?
Most smart thermostats work with heat pumps, as long as they're wired and configured for one. The thermostat needs to know the reversing valve setting, how your aux heat is wired and when aux heat is allowed to run. We check compatibility with your system before the install so there are no surprises.
Why is my heat pump blowing cold air after I installed a new thermostat?
The most common reason is a backward O/B setting, so the thermostat is telling the heat pump to cool when it should heat. Other causes are aux heat wired to the wrong terminal or the system type set to furnace instead of heat pump. It's usually a quick settings or wiring fix. Call or text us.

Where should my thermostat be?
On an inside wall in a room you use often, about eye level. Keep it away from direct sun, supply vents, exterior doors, kitchens and lamps, since heat sources give false readings. A badly placed thermostat can make a system short cycle or leave rooms uncomfortable. If yours is in a bad spot, ask us about options.
